This study aims to examine the impact of historical currents on the evolution of women’s rights and social status in Afghanistan. The research adopts a qualitative, analytical-historical approach, with data collected through library resources, historical documents, and analytical texts. In this regard, the political, social, and cultural transformations of the country across different periods—from the pre-modern era to contemporary structures after 2001 and the return of the Taliban in 2021—have been analyzed.
The findings indicate that the legal and social status of Afghan women has consistently been shaped by the complex interaction between internal forces, such as tribal traditions, religious perspectives, and patriarchal structures, as well as external factors, including colonialism, modernization, and international policymaking. Despite certain reform-oriented periods, such as the reign of Amanullah Khan and leftist secular governments, structural and cultural barriers have hindered the full realization of gender equality.
The study ultimately concludes that achieving a stable and just status for women in Afghanistan requires a multi-layered approach that simultaneously addresses historical factors, the localization of women’s rights, structural empowerment, and the re-examination of cultural discourses.
